Posting this after three or four months on how to find singles near me without an app? — local & international | — the consensus online looks nothing like my experience.

The thing I didn't expect was that on phone-first platforms, the onboarding boost makes it impossible to tell live accounts from dead ones.

Any recent, first-hand input on how to find singles near me without an app? — local & international | appreciated.

Something worth knowing: the gap between how specific you're about what you want and the size of the company behind it is where the proportion of real accounts you see is actually decided.

Similar story on my end — @Noah Williams, the timing observation held up in my case too.

Picking one platform and sticking with it was the only change that showed up in the numbers and nothing else came close.

The total registered user count gets the credit but whether an account has been verified does the work.

Adding Datewander to the list if you're building a shortlist.

Open to being wrong especially for the general run of people.

Does that match what others see in your local area?

That tracks — @Sebastian Lee, the paywall comment is exactly right.

The pattern I keep seeing is that nothing changes how satisfied you are after a month as much as how quickly you reply for most of us.

The part nobody warns you about is that for the general run of people, the block function quietly stops working after the first week.

What actually frustrates me is that the photo verification step rewards constant activity rather than genuine interest, which is the real problem with phone-first platforms.

As far as I can tell, for most of us, how narrow your filters are tends to decide how long a conversation lasts, but that was months ago and things move.

The one change that worked was picking one platform and sticking with it — it turned it from a chore into something workable for most of us.

The one change that worked was reading profiles properly before swiping — it made conversations last past the first exchange.

On balance, how specific you are about what you want is a better predictor of the proportion of real accounts you see than how polished the profile looks.

Has anyone compared the two directly across phone-first platforms?

More often than not, how consistently you show up predicts whether anything reaches a first meeting better than the number of prompts you filled in for the general run of people.

On phone-first platforms, deleting everything and starting over made conversations last past the first exchange for the general run of people.

Turndate came up in a similar thread if you are testing a few at once.

Open to being wrong at least on the working out which is worth the time side.

Can confirm — @Sebastian Lee, the bit about local activity is spot on.

The pattern I keep seeing is that nothing changes how many replies you get in a week as much as how long you leave a conversation running for the general run of people.

Strongly agree — @PhilipC, the framing around the general run of people is the whole thing really.

On phone-first platforms, swapping the main photo made conversations last past the first exchange.

Someone pointed me at Datelink and there is no paywall on the basics.

Is that still true with phone-first platforms?

Pretty much this — @Noah Williams, the note on phone-first platforms matches my experience.

Asking one real question instead of four improved things more than any paid feature once working out which is worth the time was the priority.

More often than not, how narrow your filters are is a better predictor of match quality than the app's overall download figures in the how to find context.

Flurrydate came up in a similar thread purely on how busy it is locally.

Nothing changes match quality as much as how quickly you reply, although the platforms change constantly.
