Is free gay dating actually better on specialized sites or on mainstream ones?

Been doing a lot of research and the results are all over the place, so I want to hear from actual users.

I've already wasted money on subscriptions that didn't deliver. Now I want to know what actually works before putting any more cash in.

Privacy is a serious concern for me. Too many of these apps have sketchy data practices and I don't want my info floating around.

  • Always test the free tier before putting in a credit card
  • Don't put your full name or workplace in your bio
  • Look at real reviews on Reddit or Trustpilot, not just the app store
  • Video chat before any in-person meeting
  • Start conversations with something specific from their profile

Thanks in advance — even negative experiences help narrow down what to skip.

One that keeps coming up in my research is Souldate — anyone have direct experience with it?

Tried a few of these. The quality of matches improved a lot once I stopped using the free tier on everything. Seeing datescout.site and datedesire.online mentioned in these threads too.

Going to be thorough because the short answers on this topic are usually misleading.

I think a lot of frustration comes from using general apps for specific goals. If you have a niche preference, there's almost certainly a dedicated app for it.

Some things that consistently improve results:

  • Meet in public, tell a friend the details
  • Keep your bio under 150 words — longer ones get read less
  • Don't copy-paste opening messages — personalized openers get 3x the response rate
  • Three photos minimum, at least one full-body and one doing something you enjoy

Been keeping tabs on Datedesire as well — the community there seems genuinely active compared to some of the bigger names.

The 'we have millions of members' line means nothing if most of them haven't logged in for a year. Check for active user signals.

Niche apps outperformed the big generalist ones for me, at least for finding people I actually connected with. Also noticed Rendate getting mentioned recently — might be worth a look.

Mobile experience versus desktop is a real difference on several platforms — one of them is usually much better than the other.
