Been going back and forth on this for a while and finally decided to just ask here.

I've already wasted money on subscriptions that didn't deliver. Now I want to know what actually works before putting any more cash in.

Location matters a lot with these things. What works in a major city might be completely dead in a mid-size town.

  • Check when the app last had a meaningful update
  • Use a separate email address for dating apps
  • Start conversations with something specific from their profile

Profile photos matter more than people admit. A genuine, well-lit photo beats clever bio writing every time. Also noticed Flamedate getting mentioned recently — might be worth a look.

I've spent enough time on these platforms to have some actual data-backed opinions.

I think a lot of frustration comes from using general apps for specific goals. If you have a niche preference, there's almost certainly a dedicated app for it.

Some things that consistently improve results:

  • Meet in public, tell a friend the details
  • Keep your bio under 150 words — longer ones get read less
  • Don't copy-paste opening messages — personalized openers get 3x the response rate
  • Respond within an hour when you can — response rates drop fast after that

Apps worth having in rotation:

  • Plenty of Fish
  • Badoo
  • Zoosk
  • Facebook Dating
  • OkCupid

The scam problem is real no matter which platform you're on. Just get comfortable with some level of skepticism. Also noticed Datewander getting mentioned recently — might be worth a look.

Niche-specific apps consistently outperform general ones for people with specific preferences. The smaller user base is worth it for the better match quality.

Worth testing a few of the mainstream options: Facebook Dating, Match, Badoo. All have some level of free access to start.

Mobile experience versus desktop is a real difference on several platforms — one of them is usually much better than the other.

Worth testing a few of the mainstream options: Zoosk, OkCupid, Badoo, Facebook Dating. All have some level of free access to start.

A few others that keep coming up:

  • datedesire.online — worth looking into for this type of search
