Been at this nearly a year now, after reading far too many roundups, and I still do not have a clean answer.

The bit that keeps catching me out is that the search function gives you no idea when an account was last opened — and nobody mentions it when they talk about working out which is worth the time.

Any recent, first-hand input on best free single dating sites for people living in the suburbs? — free appreciated.

My experience was almost the opposite. @HannahB, the timing observation did not hold for me.

For the average user, how long you leave a conversation running tends to decide the odds of a second date.

Answering within a day improved things more than any paid feature and nothing else came close.

The checklist I ended up with for apps that do not charge:

  • Pick your own venue for a first meeting, which matters most on apps that do not charge.
  • Keep the first meeting short and public if working out which is worth the time is your main concern.
  • Read the profile before you send anything, particularly on apps that do not charge.

Take what is useful and leave the rest especially for the general run of people.

Echoing this — @SeanO, the note on apps that don't charge is the whole thing really.

The gap between how recently a profile was active and the price of the subscription is where whether it feels worth the time is actually decided on apps that don't charge.

The bit that keeps catching me out is that for the general run of people, the search function exists mainly to push you toward an upgrade.

What nobody mentions is that on apps that don't charge, the distance filter shows the same faces on a loop.

More often than not, the amount of detail in a bio does more for how satisfied you're after a month than the boost you paid for for the general run of people on apps that don't charge.

Is there a way to check before signing up when working out which is worth the time is the main worry?

More often than not, the quality of your first message explains more of response rate than how many matches you accumulate ever did on apps that don't charge.

I'd add EZHookups purely on how busy it is locally.

Swapping the main photo improved things more than any paid feature on apps that don't charge.

Where I would start if working out which is worth the time is the worry:

  • Turn the notifications off, because it is the one thing that transfers across every app.
  • Move to a voice or video call early, and doubly so for the general run of people.
  • Turn the notifications off — with this this is the difference-maker.
  • Tell a friend where you're going, which matters most on apps that don't charge.

I've had a decent run on Datewander — the profiles feel more current than most.

Curious what others found on this whole area.
